Student Activity: Compare and Contrast works of art depicting the Trail of Tears
Student Activity:
1. Have students view The Trail of Tears painting by Robert Lindneux. 2. Identify and describe the following using words or phrases: a) the people; and b) the emotions being displayed 3. Identify and describe the overall composition (how the artist pulled everything together to depict this event) in a short paragraph. 4. Have students view The Teardrop is the Essence of the Trail of Tears by Max Standley and repeat steps 2 and 3 from above. |
5. Place students in heterozygous groups of 3 and have them compare the two pieces of art and, based upon information learned in this unit (what they have heard, seen, and read) and their responses to 1 through 6 above, collaborate to form a group opinion as to which one they believe most accurately depicts the Trail of Tears. Groups will take notes, citing examples to support the group opinion, and prepare an oral presentation to be shared with the class. |
